For Sideshow, an artist-led initiative developed to coincide with The British Art Show 6 coming to Nottingham, we continued our ongoing
investigation of forgotten places in cities, in this instance by bringing together a group of artists to respond to a non-gallery venue
in Nottingham.
We commissioned three Scotland-based artists- Craig Barrowman,
Martine Myrup and
Kevin Pollock -
whose works are directly inspired by the settings in which they exhibit, either from the history and the character of the place,
the found materials, objects or textures. Contextual relation is central to each of these artists practice, and their works are related
by their meticulousness, a slightly melancholic atmosphere, and the humorous approach, while maintaining individual responses to situations.
The combination of these new works created in response to Sneinton Market - a rows of shops and workshops just on the side of the city
centre - casted a different light on a place that has become part of our everyday peripheral vision. Through the sensitivity of each
artist to the place, chance encounters and investigations, this group generated a different and temporary life in a place that has been
left aside.
