Sea view

, Fish Quay, Tyneside, 2003

Fish quay is located at the mouth of the Tyne River, a small fishing harbour with a number of fish processing companies, and renowned locally for its many fish and chip shops and being the last place you can wave to family and friends heading out to the North Sea on the ferry.
The area was earmarked for redevelopment; Seaview was the result of a commission by Northern Print to explore qualities of the place prior to the developments.
After spending time in Fish Quay trying to find an aspect of the place we thought represented the place, we picked up on the unusual habit of people from all over the Tyne and Wear to journey here to eat fish and chips (sitting in their cars) staring out to sea in a car park partially hidden behind industrial units.
We took the view out to sea on tour and recreated this experience at five sites, (North Tyneside Hospital, Fish Quay, Moto service station (A1), outside St James football ground and Newcastle Civic Centre) through one night drive-in cinema and a sound track handed out to play on the car stereos.
Sea view was a celebration of a particular aspect of Fish Quay, not valuable or grandiose but essential in its identity.
